Our story begins over 40 years ago in the 1980s when Danilo Antonio Gonzalez Ortega laid the groundwork for mining operations and commercialization of Asphaltite in Colombia. His initial contributions involved discovering and classifying various sources of Asphaltite throughout the country. Inspired by these early efforts, two companies were founded in the late 1980s: DAGO & CIA LTDA and MICROMIN LTDA.
DAGO & CIA LTDA spearheaded the mining operation and became the first company to develop a legal Asphaltite mining operation in Colombia. In 1991, the Colombian government granted the company the first mining permit to explore and extract Asphaltite. In those early days, Asphaltite was mined using pickaxes and transported by mules.
Meanwhile, MICROMIN LTDA took charge of processing and distributing Asphaltite to various markets, including paints, waterproofing, and paving asphalts. Through their persistent market research and product development, both companies are credited with the first successful commercialization of Colombian-sourced Asphaltite as an additive for oil and gas drilling and cementation. This marked the first time our Asphaltite was used as an equivalent substitute for American asphaltite.
During this period, both companies expanded their local sales of Asphaltite and established themselves as the primary suppliers to major O&G drilling and cementation companies in Colombia.
Most drilling companies operating locally at that time used our Asphaltite primarily as a fluid loss control additive in oil-based and water-based muds. Major customers during this period included M-I SWACO Colombia, Baroid IDP Colombia, BJ Services Colombia, Baker Hughes Colombia, and QMAX Solutions Colombia.
Founded in 2010, LAVGR SAS focused on introducing Colombian Asphaltite to the global market. Formed as a sibling partnership between some of Danilo Gonzalez’s descendants, this company is credited with the first export of Asphaltite from Colombia. Notably, it became the only company in the world to supply and deliver foreign Asphaltite to the trademark owner in Utah, USA.
During this period, Asphaltite from Colombia was exported exclusively to the USA as mine run ore packed in supersacks.
Founded in 2010, LAV
This era saw the emergence of several new Colombian companies attempting to enter the international market. One such company, Colombian Asphaltite SAS, founded in 2016, became the first to deliver Colombian-sourced Asphaltite to Asia. They initially exported the product to India, later expanding to China and the Middle East.
Concurrently, LAVGR SAS began delivering pulverized and finished products to international oil and gas drilling companies, moving beyond mine run ore. As demand for Asphaltite surged during these years, they invested in developing new sources in other regions of Colombia and explored more cost-effective methods to customize, grind, size, and package the products.
GR SAS focused on introducing Colombian Asphaltite to the global market. Asfaltitas del Oriente SAS, founded in 2022, has established its own market in the US, Mexico, and India. They sell both mine run ore and pulverized finished products. Additionally, Asfaltitas del Oriente SAS supplies local companies involved in road paving in Colombia.
Naturphalt LLC, also founded in 2022 in the USA, is a joint venture between various Colombian companies and a team of oil and gas drilling experts based in the United States. Naturphalt LLC focuses on leveraging extensive technical experience to carefully yield and select only the finest varieties of pure Asphaltites. Our goal is to provide exceptional performance additives for oil and gas drilling operations and other industrial applications.
